A Father’s Gift of Life: How One Man’s Kidney Saved His Daughter from the Same Illness That Claimed Her Brother

For most parents, the ultimate dream is simple: to see their children healthy, happy, and thriving. But for Karen Rodas and Paul Bybkin, that dream was nearly shattered—twice.

Their first child, a son named Nathaniel, was born with polycystic kidney disease (PKD), a rare genetic disorder that causes clusters of cysts to develop in the kidneys, eventually leading to kidney failure. Tragically, Nathaniel lived only 36 hours.

When the couple welcomed their daughter, Maddy, in 2013, they were filled with hope—but also fear. Their worst nightmare came true when doctors confirmed that Maddy had inherited the same life-threatening condition.

As Maddy grew, her abdomen became severely swollen—so distended that it resembled a woman in the late stages of pregnancy. Her days were marked by exhaustion, with up to 18 hours of sleep daily, and frequent hospital visits became the norm.

Despite the grim outlook, the family held on to one hope: a kidney transplant. Doctors explained that Maddy's chances of survival and leading a normal life hinged on finding a compatible donor.

That hope was realized when testing revealed that her father, Paul, was a perfect match.

"With Paul and Maddy, two of my most precious souls, going under the knife, my nerves were a wreck,” Karen shared with The Mirror.

The transplant surgery was a success. Paul donated one of his kidneys to his daughter, giving her not just a second chance—but a whole new life.

“Daddy’s kidney has saved our little girl,” Karen said. “Now, she has boundless energy. Her massive tummy now just looks a little bit rounded, and she is a happy and healthy two-year-old.”

For Paul, the decision was instinctive.

“We’ve been on a rollercoaster,” he admitted. “But any father would have done what I did. Donating my kidney to Maddy—it’s just part of being a parent.”

Today, Maddy is thriving. While doctors anticipate she may need another transplant in about 25 years, her parents are focusing on the present—watching their daughter enjoy a joyful, energetic childhood once thought impossible.

The Bybkin family’s story is one of unimaginable heartbreak transformed into hope and healing—thanks to a father's unwavering love and a life-saving gift. Love and peace to this courageous family. Share their inspiring story to spread hope and raise awareness about the power of organ donation.
