How I Detected Thyroid Cancer Early at Home With Just a Glass of Water

Recently, news about comedian Hoai Linh’s thyroid cancer diagnosis has caused quite a stir. Many began to empathize, realizing that health problems may have been the reason he stepped back from public appearances.

As the saying goes: "When you're healthy, you have many wishes; when you're sick, you only have one." This isn’t about defending or criticizing anyone—it’s a reminder for all of us to take care of our health. Simply having a healthy body is already a privilege that many around the world long for.

I’ve come to understand thyroid cancer quite well, because a family member of mine suffered from it—and now, I’m personally battling it too.

Cancer often develops silently. Even as it progresses, many people feel completely fine. I was one of them.

About a year ago, I came across a 2017 report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), which mentioned that simply feeling around the neck area could detect thyroid nodules in up to 11.6% of cases.

Since someone in my family had the condition, I decided to try this self-check method. To my surprise, I noticed something abnormal. The next day, I asked my husband to take me to the oncology hospital. After an ultrasound and a biopsy, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.

Even though I had mentally prepared myself, I was still terrified. Fortunately, the doctor said it was in the early stage (a small tumor), and that surgery would likely solve the problem.

Now, more than two months post-surgery, I’ve fully recovered and feel healthy again. I’m incredibly thankful I discovered it early.

That’s why I think everyone—especially those at risk—should know this simple thyroid self-exam method using only a glass of water. Here’s how you can do it at home in 6 easy steps:

6 Simple Steps to Check Your Thyroid at Home

Step 1: Stand in front of a mirror

This helps you clearly observe the front of your neck, above the collarbones and below the Adam’s apple—where your thyroid gland is located.

Step 2: Tilt your head back

Still focusing on the thyroid area, gently tilt your head back so your chin points slightly upward. This stretches the neck, making it easier to spot any irregularities.

Step 3: Take a sip of water

Swallowing moves your larynx (voice box) forward, which helps highlight the thyroid gland’s outline and movement—making any lumps or swelling easier to see.

Step 4: Watch your neck as you swallow

While swallowing, look for any bumps, bulges, or asymmetry in the thyroid area. Repeat this step several times to ensure accuracy.
Doctors say thyroid nodules often appear as round lumps. If you see something moving with your swallow, it might be time to get checked.

Step 5: Feel the area with your fingers

Gently touch and feel around your thyroid for any unusual growths or protruding masses. Use light pressure with your fingers on both sides of your neck.

Step 6: See a doctor promptly if anything feels off

If you notice any lumps, swelling, or abnormalities, it’s best to visit a doctor as soon as possible for further testing—like ultrasound or biopsy. Early detection makes treatment much easier.

This 6-step method is easy to perform regularly at home and could give you peace of mind. If you ever feel anything unusual, don’t hesitate to seek professional guidance. The earlier the intervention, the better your chances for full recovery.
