Famous Writer Diagnosed with Two Types of Cancer Lived to 104: The First Two Things He Did Were More Important Than Diet

Despite being diagnosed with two types of cancer, a famous Chinese writer Ma Shitu persevered and lived to the age of 104. His story proves that longevity is not solely about nutrition, but deeply tied to mindset and healthy daily habits.
Does having a serious illness mean you can’t live long?
Since ancient times, people have pursued the dream of immortality. Today, we know that maintaining healthy habits and a balanced diet are key to safeguarding our well-being and extending lifespan.
But what if you are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness — does that mean you'll never live to 100?
In modern times, cancer is widely feared, often seen as a death sentence. Yet many people with malignant tumors have lived on for decades — even beyond 100 years — like the well-known Chinese writer and calligrapher Ma Shitu.
Ma Shitu: Diagnosed Twice with Cancer Yet Lived to 104
-
In 2001, Ma Shitu was diagnosed with kidney cancer and had to undergo surgery to remove one kidney.
-
In 2007, he was again diagnosed, this time with lung cancer.
After battling two difficult and dangerous illnesses, Ma Shitu stunned many by continuing to live a healthy life — all the way to age 104.
What was his secret to overcoming such a deadly disease?
1. Maintaining a Positive Attitude
While most people sink into despair upon learning they have cancer, Ma Shitu reacted very differently. The first time he faced cancer, he wrote the following on his wall:
"I will walk my own path without regret."
This firm belief became his greatest weapon in fighting disease.
Six years later, when diagnosed with lung cancer, he didn’t retreat — he advanced. He took on the illness head-on and often told friends:
"There is no such thing as ‘surrender’ in my life dictionary."
He refused to let negativity take over. Instead, he remained hopeful and warm toward family and friends.
π Scientific research has shown that maintaining an optimistic mental state can enhance physical strength and boost the immune system.
2. Never Stopped Writing
Even after his cancer diagnosis, Ma Shitu continued writing daily to enrich his mind and life. His thinking remained sharp, and even while ill, he was dedicated to his craft.
Despite his illness, he accomplished a great deal:
-
Published multiple books
-
Had his works adapted into films
-
Held personal calligraphy exhibitions
Writing with all his heart may have helped keep his blood circulation stable, preventing the spread of cancer cells. Regular mental stimulation has also been shown to enhance blood flow and cognitive function — keeping the brain healthy and active.
His mental agility and creative thinking were undoubtedly beneficial for his physical health.
3. Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle
Cancer never changed Ma Shitu’s long-standing healthy lifestyle. He went to bed early, woke up early, and never stayed up late — ensuring adequate sleep each night.
-
7:00 AM: He would wake up, do some light exercise, and walk in the courtyard.
Exercise helped boost his metabolism, improved both physical and mental well-being, and enhanced immunity and resistance to illness.
After exercising, his routine included:
-
Enjoying a hearty breakfast
-
Reading the news
-
Listening to traditional Chinese classical music or a Schubert symphony
-
Dedicating the rest of the day to focused, meaningful work
Simple, Balanced Diet
-
He preferred light, clean meals
-
Loved fruits and vegetables
-
Rarely consumed greasy or spicy foods
In Summary
By maintaining healthy routines, a positive mindset, and staying mentally and creatively active, Ma Shitu overcame serious illness and lived a long, fulfilling life. He serves as an inspiring role model — not just for longevity, but for how to live meaningfully and with purpose.
His story reminds us: instead of giving in to disease or despair, we can choose hope, discipline, and active living — and by doing so, take control of our lives.
