Barstow, Calif. — A 2-year-old boy who was swept away by powerful floodwaters in Barstow, California, has been found dead, authorities confirmed Friday afternoon.

The child, identified as Xavier Padilla Aguilera, was discovered at approximately 2:44 p.m. PT in the San Bernardino County Flood Control channel south of the Mojave River, according to the Barstow Police Department.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. We extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy,” police said in a statement.

Incident details

The tragedy unfolded Thursday evening when Xavier and his father, Brandon Padilla Aguilera, 26, were caught in sudden floodwaters and separated from their vehicle. Authorities said the flood carried them northward before the father was rescued and transported to Barstow Community Hospital. He was treated and later released.

Family members told ABC News affiliate KABC-TV that Xavier was autistic and nonverbal. At the time of his disappearance, he was last seen wearing black pants, a black shirt, and black-and-white Nike shoes.

Severe weather impact

The incident occurred amid severe thunderstorms across Southern California, which triggered flash floods and dangerous conditions. In Oak Glen, dramatic footage captured by ABC News showed a massive mudslide tearing down a hillside, destroying everything in its path.

Search and recovery efforts

The discovery followed an extensive multi-agency search effort involving the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway Police, California Highway Patrol, and the county fire department’s Swift Water Rescue Team. Local volunteers from the Desert Recovery Group, along with community members, also joined in the search.

Authorities said counseling services and community support are being offered to help those affected by the tragedy.

Ongoing investigation

The Barstow Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
