Scientists Spot ‘Real-Life’ SpongeBob and Patrick in the Deep Sea

Image preview

Sometimes science looks just like a cartoon. During a 2021 ocean expedition, scientists made a surprising discovery nearly 1,900 meters (over 6,000 feet) below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean: a bright yellow sponge sitting right next to a pink sea star. The image immediately reminded researchers — and the internet — of the iconic cartoon duo SpongeBob SquarePants and his best friend Patrick Star.

A Cartoon Come to Life

The discovery was made by NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer while surveying the Retriever Seamount off the U.S. East Coast. Deep-sea sponges are usually white or muted in color, making the vibrant yellow sponge stand out dramatically. Right beside it sat a pink starfish of the genus Chondraster, completing the uncanny resemblance to SpongeBob and Patrick.

The Science Behind the Scene

  • The Sponge: Likely a glass sponge (Hertwigia), whose skeleton is made of silica, giving it a delicate, glass-like structure.

  • The Starfish: A pink Chondraster, known for its fleshy arms and ability to prey on sponges.

And here’s the twist: unlike in the cartoon, sponges and starfish aren’t actually best friends. In fact, starfish often feed on sponges — meaning Patrick might not have the friendliest intentions in real life!

Why It Matters

Beyond the playful resemblance, the sighting highlights how little we know about the deep ocean. At such depths, every unusual discovery provides valuable insight into biodiversity, adaptation, and marine ecosystems. The expedition itself, called North Atlantic Stepping Stones, aimed to map unexplored seamounts and uncover hidden species.

A Fun Reminder from the Ocean

The viral image of SpongeBob and Patrick’s “real-life” lookalikes shows that science doesn’t always have to be serious. Sometimes, nature mirrors pop culture in the most unexpected ways.

As one NOAA scientist joked: “We usually avoid anthropomorphizing, but this time it was just too perfect.”

🌊 Fun fact takeaway: The ocean is full of surprises — and sometimes, even our favorite cartoon characters seem to come to life at the bottom of the sea!
