Woman issues terrifying warning after finding a stroller abandoned on the side of the road

Viral Warning: “Abandoned Baby” Scam Could Put Your Life at Risk, Mom Cautions
A new and deeply concerning scam is making the rounds — one that preys on the kindness of strangers. A mother named Nancy Walsh has issued a powerful warning on social media after encountering what she believes could have been a dangerous trap disguised as a baby in distress.
“If you see a stroller, car seat, or any type of baby situation alone in the middle of nowhere, please, I repeat, don’t get out. Be safe,” she wrote.
A Suspicious Discovery
Nancy, a real estate agent from Virginia, was driving on a remote country road when her headlights illuminated something troubling: an empty baby stroller sitting just off the roadside, surrounded by trees, far from any homes or other vehicles. She immediately felt uneasy.
To spread awareness, she shared photos of the eerie scene online. The stroller was facing away from her car, adding to the mystery of whether anything — or anyone — was inside.
Could It Be a Trap?
Walsh’s post quickly went viral, with many people echoing her fear. The concern? That the abandoned stroller is a lure — part of a growing scam in which criminals use emotional bait to trick people into leaving their vehicle. Once the person gets out, they risk being robbed, carjacked, or worse.
“Never get out. Always call 911 and let local authorities investigate,” one commenter wrote.
“At best, they rob you — at worst, they hurt you,” said another.
The Dark Side of Kindness
This type of scam feeds on empathy — the instinct to help a vulnerable child. And sadly, it’s not the only one of its kind.
Other schemes involve:
-
Women or children crying for help to lure good Samaritans close
-
People pretending to collapse near the road, while accomplices lie in wait
One Facebook user shared:
“I pulled over once to help a man who seemed passed out. A police officer later told me these situations are often staged, especially dangerous for women driving alone.”
Another added:
“I’ve heard of women screaming, pretending to be hurt. Just call the police and stay in your car.”
Could It Be Harmless?
A few commenters pointed out that some people leave baby gear on the roadside intentionally — not as a trap, but as a form of freecycling, hoping someone will reuse items they no longer need.
Still, the majority urged caution, stressing that when it comes to safety, it’s better to assume the worst and let authorities handle it.
A Final Word of Caution
Nancy Walsh’s post has been shared more than 23,000 times, with parents and solo travelers especially shaken by the possibility of being targeted for simply wanting to help.
Her message resonates:
“This is so cruel, because they’re targeting the best of us — the ones who care,” one mother wrote.
π¨ What Should You Do If You See Something Suspicious?
-
Stay in your car. Lock the doors.
-
Call 911 and report what you see.
-
Never approach the scene alone, no matter how innocent it looks.
-
Share this warning with friends and family, especially women and frequent drivers.
