Blind, Near-Death Puppy Left in Amazon Box Makes Miraculous Recovery Thanks to Animal Rescue

Animal rescues often work wonders, but every now and then, a recovery so extraordinary reminds us of the power of compassion and care. That’s exactly what happened when Speranza Animal Rescue in Pennsylvania took in a blind, unconscious dog clinging to life — and helped him make a miraculous comeback.

Earlier this week, the rescue shared the heartbreaking story of a young dog found abandoned on a porch — inside an Amazon box. He was unresponsive and initially feared to be dead. But taped to the box was a handwritten note that shed light on his tragic circumstances.

“I am also deaf. I’m a very good dog but my last owner only had me for a month and wasn’t told I was sick. I ate something — my last owner doesn’t know what’s wrong. Please help me. She loves me very much and doesn’t know how to help me because she is sick and has no money.”

Despite the grim scene, rescuers quickly realized the dog was still alive, though barely. He was unconscious, barely breathing, and in an appalling condition: severely malnourished, covered in feces and urine, with matted fur. He was also suffering from seizures, and his pupils were unresponsive to light.

“He’s not even a year old. Just a baby,” Speranza Animal Rescue wrote in an emotional Facebook post. “He’s in really bad shape. Please pray.”

The team administered anti-seizure medication, IV fluids, and rushed him to the emergency vet. The odds were uncertain — but the little fighter wasn’t ready to give up.

Miraculously, the dog — now named GI Joe — began to stabilize. He responded well to the medications and was later evaluated by a neurologist and given an MRI. While he remains deaf and blind — and it’s unclear whether his sight will return — his overall condition began to improve dramatically.

Just days after being found on the brink of death, GI Joe was standing, eating on his own, and full of new life. Even more heartwarming: he was healthy enough to be placed in a foster home.

“We still cannot believe a few days ago this boy was barely alive,” the rescue wrote in a joyous update. “Thank you so much to his foster family.”
