A Joyful Beginning, a Sudden Turn

The condition also distorts the shape of the eyes, mouth, nose, and ears. There is no cure. Many children born with it do not survive infancy.

Life with Harlequin ichthyosis is filled with challenges. Daily care is intense: Brenna must be bathed and moisturized thoroughly each day to help her shed excess skin and reduce the risk of infection. Evan, who once joked about ponytails, now gently massages his daughter’s delicate skin with thick cream each night. He combs her thin hair carefully, and never misses bedtime stories.

Courtney, too, has become an advocate and author. In 2016, she published a memoir titled A Different Beautiful, a heartfelt reflection on their family’s journey, written to challenge how society sees physical differences.

Facing the World’s Gaze

Perhaps the hardest part of Brenna’s condition is not the physical care, but the public reactions. Courtney recalls the hurt of other parents pulling their children away from Brenna on the playground, or silencing their questions instead of encouraging compassion.

“What are they afraid of?” she asks. “Why can’t they just walk up and ask how old she is?”
