Henkel Recalls Tec Italy Shampoo Over Bacterial Contamination Concerns

Berlin/New York — German consumer goods giant Henkel has recalled more than 1,000 bottles of its Tec Italy Totale Shampoo following concerns that the product may be contaminated with Klebsiella oxytoca, a potentially harmful bacterium capable of causing infections in the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.

Distribution and Product Details

The company confirmed that the affected shampoo was distributed in New York and California, but warned that some bottles may have reached consumers in additional states. Tec Italy products are also available for purchase online, including in Europe.

According to Henkel’s statement, the recalled shampoo is packaged in a green 1-liter (33.81 fl. oz.) bottle with lot number 1G27542266 printed on the side and UPC code 7501438375850.

Health Risks Associated with Klebsiella oxytoca

Klebsiella oxytoca is not harmful when confined to the intestinal tract. However, if it spreads to other parts of the body, it can cause severe infections and carries a 10–20% mortality rate in cases where it enters the bloodstream.

Potential health effects include:

  • Eye, skin, and nasal infections

  • Pneumonia-like symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, and shortness of breath

  • More serious complications in immunocompromised individuals

No Injuries Reported to Date

Henkel emphasized that no injuries or illnesses have been reported in connection with the recalled shampoo. “Consumers who experience symptoms, or have any medical questions associated with this recall, should consult a physician immediately,” the company stated.

The recall has been classified as a Class II recall, meaning that while the risk of serious health effects is considered remote, exposure could result in temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.

Refunds and Consumer Guidance

Henkel is urging consumers to immediately stop using the product and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
