Dr. Sanduk Ruit: The “Miracle Doctor” Who Restored Sight to the World’s Poorest
Kathmandu, Nepal – In remote Himalayan villages and across some of the world’s most fragile regions, a humble surgeon has been changing lives with a pair of steady hands and a vision for humanity. Dr. Sanduk Ruit, often hailed as the “Miracle Doctor,” has restored sight to more than 100,000 people in Asia and Africa — many of them completely free of charge.
A Vision Beyond Borders
Growing up in the mountainous regions of Nepal, Dr. Ruit witnessed how blindness devastated families who could not afford treatment. Determined to change this reality, he pioneered a revolutionary cataract surgery technique known as Small Incision Cataract Surgery (SICS). The procedure, which takes only minutes to perform, uses low-cost intraocular lenses yet delivers results comparable to expensive Western methods.
This innovation means patients once destined for lifelong blindness can see again within hours — at a fraction of the cost.
Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology
In 1994, Dr. Ruit co-founded the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology in Kathmandu. The institute not only treats thousands of patients each year but also trains eye surgeons from around the world and produces affordable intraocular lenses for under $5. By cutting costs without compromising quality, the center ensures that no one is left blind simply because of poverty.
His mobile “eye camps” bring surgery to some of the hardest-to-reach corners of Nepal, Bhutan, North Korea, Ethiopia, and beyond. Makeshift operating rooms are set up in schools, tents, and even cattle sheds — wherever patients need help.
Global Recognition
Dr. Ruit’s work has earned him some of the world’s highest honors, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Order of Australia, and most recently, the Isa Award for Service to Humanity in 2023. Each accolade recognizes not only his surgical skill but also his unwavering commitment to human dignity.
His mission extends through the Himalayan Cataract Project, which he co-founded to eliminate preventable blindness worldwide. Since 1995, the project has helped restore vision to more than 1.4 million people across developing nations.
Restoring More Than Sight
For the people he treats, the gift of sight is life-changing. Children can return to school, parents can work again, and entire families escape the cycle of poverty. “Blindness is not just a medical issue,” Dr. Ruit has often said. “It is a social and economic burden that can be lifted with compassion and innovation.”
A Legacy of Hope
From the peaks of the Himalayas to villages in Africa, Dr. Sanduk Ruit embodies what it means for one person’s vision to transform millions of lives. By combining medical excellence with compassion, he has shown that true miracles are built not on wealth or technology, but on empathy and determination.
As the world faces growing health inequalities, the story of the “Miracle Doctor” stands as a reminder: restoring sight also restores hope.
